Private signs are not permitted on Highway Right-of-Ways

We would like to remind everyone that State Law prohibits placement of private signs in the Highway Right of Ways in Wisconsin. This applies to signs for advertising, realty, political campaigns, or any other sign not placed by the state, county or municipality.  Signs that are improperly placed in the right of way may distract a motorist’s attention, obstruct a motorist’s view, compound damages or injuries in event of a crash and present obstacles for crews who maintain the roadways.

Signs that are found in the highway right of way will be removed.  We will attempt to preserve signs that are removed and you may call the town hall to determine if we are in possession of your signs.  If other items are placed in the right of ways we will contact you to remove that item and will take further action if it is not removed.

The highway’s right of way is approximately 33 feet from the center line of the highway. The Right of Way includes the roadway surface, shoulders and ditches.  If you have any questions regarding right of ways please contact Jay Kimble our Zoning Administrator.
